Building Ontario Fund’s Mandate Expanded to Include Critical Minerals

Fund to invest and catalyze investment in infrastructure projects enabling this high-priority sector

Toronto, ON – The Ontario government is expanding the mandate of the Building Ontario Fund (BOF) to include critical minerals as a new priority area for infrastructure investment. BOF plays a pivotal role in catalyzing investments in transformative infrastructure projects across the province. With this expanded mandate, BOF will be able to invest in enabling infrastructure – such as roads, energy systems, transportation, and housing – that will make it possible for Ontario’s critical minerals sector to grow. These investments will be made in collaboration with institutional investors, government ministries, and Indigenous partners.

“We’re grateful to the Ontario government for their ongoing support and this expanded mandate,” said Michael Fedchyshyn, CEO, Building Ontario Fund. “Investing in infrastructure projects that enable the critical minerals sector complements our existing priority areas for investment. The expanded mandate enables BOF to consider more co-investment projects with a wider range of stakeholders, including Indigenous financing opportunities to accelerate investment and economic development in Northern Ontario communities.”

The update to the Fund’s mandate was shared in the 2025 Ontario Economic Outlook and Fiscal Review, presented by the Honourable Peter Bethlenfalvy, Ontario Minister of Finance.

“Building Ontario Fund was created to accelerate investment in high-priority infrastructure projects across Ontario, and that now includes enabling infrastructure of the critical minerals sector,” said Minister Bethlenfalvy. “This expanded scope for BOF is expected to benefit Ontario and Indigenous partners as it supports the growth of a highly strategic sector for the province.”
